Credit by Examination
Credit by examination is available in selected curriculum courses for students who demonstrate prior learning and sufficient subject matter competency to justify advanced standing. This process supports academic acceleration in accordance with institutional policy and applicable State Board of Community Colleges (SBCCC) guidelines.
To request credit by examination, a student must be formally enrolled in the course and submit the required application. Tuition and applicable fees must be paid prior to the administration of the examination. Proficiency examinations will be administered and evaluated by qualified faculty or designated academic personnel. The Dean of Business, Transfer and Service Careers or Dean of CTE and Health Sciences is responsible for approving eligible courses for credit by examination.
Only courses identified in the official college catalog and approved for credit by examination may be challenged, and credit awarded may not exceed the credit hours assigned to the course.
Credit by examination may be attempted during any term in which the course is offered. Students intending to enroll in a sequential course are encouraged to complete the examination prior to the end of the registration period to ensure appropriate placement. In all other cases, credit by examination should be completed by the established midterm deadline.
A grade of “CE” (Credit by Examination) will be recorded on the student’s transcript for successfully completed examinations. While credit will be awarded, it will not be included in the calculation of the student’s grade point average (GPA). If a student does not successfully pass the examination, a “CX” (Credit Examination Not Awarded) will be recorded on the transcript.
Students are not eligible to challenge a course in which a grade of “F” has previously been earned or for which the student has officially enrolled as an audit.
No more than 25 percent of the total credit hours required for a degree or diploma may be earned through credit by examination. Students are encouraged to consult the receiving institution’s transfer policies regarding acceptance of credit awarded through examination.
